Sustainability
The UK precast concrete industry acknowledges that it has a responsibility to improve its performance on sustainability. The industry is becoming more resource efficient and environmentally aware through numerous initiatives led by MPA.
MPA Precast and MPA Masonry members demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by signing the Sustainability Charter - a mandatory requirement for membership - which is fully and independently audited. The Precast Sustainability Charter and KPI initiative is part of a wider Concrete Sustainability Strategy initiative, led by UK Concrete. The precast sector developed a Precast Resource Efficiency Action Plan (REAP) in 2013 in collaboration with WRAP, BRMCA (British Ready-Mixed Concrete Association) and the BDA (Bricks Development Association) to improve different indicators and aspects associated with resource efficiency.
In 2020, the UK Concrete & Cement industry became the first construction product sector to launch a roadmap to Net Zero Carbon. The new Roadmap offers an ambitious plan to take the sector to a “Beyond Net Zero” status by 2050, using a wide range of decarbonisation technologies and initiatives.

The aim of the Precast Sector Sustainability Charter is to encourage member companies of MPA Precast to go beyond legislation and take voluntary actions to make their products and operations more sustainable.
We report annually on 19 key performance indicators associated with the sustainability of the precast concrete sector. Our reports cover between 60 to 75% of the UK's precast market.
The Precast REAP was introduced in 2013 to help improve Resource Efficiency across the supply chain and support coordination with the downstream of the supply chain where precast concrete suppliers have no direct control over how their products are used.
The precast and concrete masonry sectors are part of the UK Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy and are fully committed to the strategy’s vision and objectives.
In UK Construction, the term EPD is now short-hand for LCA (Life-cycle assessment) output compliant with EN 15804, the European standard which has been written to provide the rules for company and industry claims on environments credentials.
